Clinical Trials

A clinical trial is a particular type of clinical research that compares one treatment with another.

An NHS OpenAthens username and password is required to access those databases marked with an asterisk(*).

Current Controlled Trials allows users to search, register and share information about randomised controlled trials.

NICE Evidence Healthcare Databases*

The NICE Evidence Healthcare Databases including Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, BNI and Cinahl contain references, often with informative summaries or abstracts, to journal articles including clinical trials.


PEDro is the Physiotherapy Evidence Database. PEDro is a free database of over 24,000 randomised trials, systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines in physiotherapy.


OTseeker is a database that contains abstracts of systematic reviews, randomised controlled trials and other resources relevant to occupational therapy interventions.

Cochrane Library

The Cochrane Library is a set of databases of high quality evidence on the effects of healthcare interventions and treatments.  The Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) database is a searchable register of controlled trials.
